Never use a lubricant in any worm gear unless it is specifically designed for worm gear service. Industrial EP or automotive gear lubes will not provide necessary wear protection and gear sets may overheat even at less than their rated load. Worm gears need a different lubricant than other gear types because they have a high relative motion with low contact pressure. Other gear types have low relative motion but operate at much higher contact pressures. Gear oil types are not interchangeable
